Little Hotch Moment: 1.08 Natural Born Killer
So. Other than Ana’s perfect insight (and I also agree with tags wholeheartedly), I want to point out a few more things that I love about this scene.
I love the way Hotch said, “some people grow up to become killers. somepeople grow up to catch them”. No judgement here. There is nothing about “I’m in good side. You’re in bad side. Because I’m better than you”. Same in Restoration. When Hotch said Morgan became FBI agent and the unsub went other way, there’s no judgement. Because he knows it’s never that simple either a person goes one way or the other. What he shows here is more of understanding than judgement. He hardly ever judges people is one of the things I love about him the most. And, I really love Perotta’s response to Hotch’s answer. It’s this realization hits. He, for the first time in his life, actually realized he could have gone different way. And his eyes got just a little bit soften for the realization that Hotch was him on the other side. Quiet understanding from both side. Stunning acting.
1x08 Natural Born Killer
It still amazes me that, in a fandom always so eager to find subtext everywhere, there are still so many who don’t believe Hotch was abused as a child simply because he never said it outright. Writing-wise, this scene does everything I aspire to do in my own scripts: it perfectly balances the showing with the telling, it fills the conversation between the two men with unsaid things, without ever making it feel overwrought and artificial. And the acting… TG and Patrick Kilpatrick just nail it. Their expressions are not those of opponents who’ve come to the end of a match of wits, but of two men who are looking at a mirror image of themselves, at what their own lives could’ve been had they taken a different path after going through similar experiences. And the whole thing ends up being so much more powerful than if Hotch just broke down during a case, and admitted to one of the others (insert pairing of your preference for a bit of angst/comfort fanservice) what his father had done to him.
(reblogging again because this post is perfect).
This is one of the greatest insights I’ve ever read in CM fandom. After a couple of years of participating -even lightly- in fandom, I now often feel I should leave it and just enjoy by myself, especially my favorite blogs are gone one by one. But these wonderful, great insights keep me in touch with fandom. Because it’s really joy to read them. Thank you.

I really like this Hotch’s not really but “just a little bit smirk” face here. He is like slightly amused and like “good job, way to go, Reid” in very Hotch’s way and I like it.
I find these two are great combination against authorities. Reid’s “I don’t care who you are, I never miss any detail and attack with most unprepared way” attitude plus Hotch’s “knows how to handle politically and legally and how to show never afraid or back down from authority, and does it with class” attitude are very effective, I think.
